Massage has been used for thousands of years and in many different countries and has been used for healing and comfort. Swedish massage was established in Stockholm in early 19th Century and was taught all over Europe later on.

What is Swedish massage

Massage is the manipulation of soft tissue and can promote circulation and blood flow. The hands, fingers, thumbs forearms or elbows can be used to apply pressure during a massage. Swedish massage also consists of using strokes, kneading, friction, tapping, percussion, vibration and rubbing in the direction of the heart. Massage promotes wellbeing and its healing effects can be felt physically and psychologically.  Pregnancy massage also available, please use the contact form on this website to enquire.

There are also many disorders that can benefit from massage such as depression, work-related stress, muscle tension, eating disorders, repetitive strain injury and headaches to name a few.

A brief history of reiki

Reiki‘Rei’ means ‘universal’ and ‘ki’ means ‘life force energy’. Reiki is a natural healing process that has been used for thousands of years. Reiki was first used by Tibetan Buddist monks and was rediscovered in Japan during the 19th Century by a Christian minister named Dr Mikao Usui.

What is reiki

Reiki assists in the balancing of the body’s energies, physically and emotionally. The Usui system of Reiki is what I practice. Reiki will go to where it is needed. Reiki is a safe treatment and the client stays fully clothed as it is a non-intrusive process. Reiki can be received by anyone who has intention to receive it. Reiki may help those who are recovering from different types if illness and will complement those who have been treated medically. The client must want to heal and must want to receive Reiki to feel the benefit of it. Intent is an important aspect of Reiki.

Benefits of reiki

May give a sense of deep relaxation, release of tensions/negative stress, a sense of peace, general improvement of health and wellbeing, acceleration of natural healing and relief of pain (physically and/or emotionally). This list is not exhaustive.

A brief history of reflexology

reflexology was originally practiced in Egypt, India and China according to ancient history. It seemed to be a tradition that the people of these countries would practice foot massage on each other. Eunice Ingham (amongst others) brought reflexology into the modern world in the 20th century.

What is Reflexology?

reflexology is a popular complementary therapy in the UK and many other cultures today. Reflexology consists of pressure applied to the feet from the fingers and thumbs of the therapist. The pressure is applied on points of the feet (or hands) that relate to parts of the body, organs and systems. Before and after the pressure is applied to the reflex points, massage is provided for the feet. Like other therapies, reflexology is a healing technique and so brings the principle of balancing the mind body and spirit of the individual receiving it and restoring harmony.  Also available: ‘Reflexology for Pregnancy’ and ‘Reflexology for Infertility’ (for both females & males). Please use the contact form on this website to enquire.

Benefits of Reflexology

May help to promote relaxation, stress relief, improved sleep, energy flow, healing, improved mood. Reflexology may help treat different medical ailments and can also be used to protect the body from future illness (headaches, migraines, infertility, digestive problems (IBS), arthritis, sleep disorders, stress, hormonal disorders and more). Reflexology can be used on people of all ages (from babies to the elderly) and may help people cope with illness (you don’t have to have an illness or medical problem to receive reflexology).

Hot Stone Massage

A brief history of hot stone massage

hot stone massage

hot stone massage

The use of heated stones is thought of as a recent or new part of massage when in fact it dates back to over two thousand years ago as the Chinese used this therapy to improve the function of the internal organs.  The laying of stones in patterns occurred as a tradition and as a healing therapy in Egypt, Greece, India, Native America and other areas. Hot and cold stones were also used by the Romans in the Roman Baths

What is hot stone massage

Heated stones (usually basalt stones) of different sizes (depending on body area being worked) are held by the therapist and applied using techniques that mirror those used in Swedish massage. No pressure is required from the therapist as the heat from the stones penetrates deep into the tissue.

Benefits of Hot stone massage

Hot stone massage may increase metabolism, increase circulation, decrease pain, soften tissue, increase inflammatory response and raise body temperature (a good winter warmer).  Hot stone massage works deeper than normal massage provides relaxation and a great sense of wellbeing for the mind and spirit as the stones contain energies.

What is involved in a Facial

A facial treatment consists of cleansing, toning, exfoliating, steaming (with hot towels and applicable essential oil or with a salon steamer), facial massage which includes massaging the neck, chest and shoulders and lasts for approx. 15 mins, mask application which includes massage of the arms and hands whilst waiting for the mask to set for 10 mins, toning and finally moisturising.

Benefits of a Facial

Toning of the skin and facial muscle tone in turn reducing the appearance of wrinkles if treatment is done regularly and other lifestyle factors are cared for such as diet, fluid intake and regular exercise.  Daily cleansing, toning and moisturizing of skin at home must be maintained as well as exfoliation and mask application at home on a regular basis to sustain healthy looking skin. Facial massage is a healing process that treats the mind as well as the body. This treatment promotes relaxation andmay also reduce stress, anxiety and headaches.

Hopi Ear Candling

A brief history of Hopi Ear Candling

hopi ear candles

hopi ear candles

It is believed that the native American Hopi Indian tribe traditionally used ear candling although there is little evidence for the true history of ear candling.  It has been used by different cultures for centuries for purposes of spiritual healing & meditation but also for physical use in modern day.

What is Hopi Ear Candling

The client lays on their side and a  specially made ‘candle’ is lit and carefully inserted into the beginning ear which the therapist holds for its duration. The candle has a chimney effect by drawing air by suction which gives the ear drum a gentle massage and regulates ear pressure.

Benefits of Hopi Ear Candling

Hopi Ear Candling may help to regulate ear pressure, tinnitus, sinusitis, colds, sore throats, ear ache, infections, allergies, lymphatic congestion, asthma. May also help restore equilibrium/balance to the mind & body’s energy flow and release stagnant energy.

Deep Tissue Massage (DTM)

What is DTM

deep tissue massage

deep tissue massage

This is a specific massage in which different techniques are used to work below superficial connective tissue with intent to break up old structural patterns allowing oxygen and nutrient flowing freely to the blood.  A considerable amount of pressure is applied by the therapist using deep and slow movements.  This can cause discomfort to the client but the therapist will work with the clients comfort zone by using breathing techniques.

Benefits of DTM

DTM may help with bad posture, chronic joint pain, muscle pain or injuries, knots & tension (overworked muscles), stiffness, stress, trapped nerves and oxygenation of poorly circulated areas. DTM may also help those who perform repetitive tasks and those that participate in sports regularly.

Indian Head Massage(IHM)

A brief history of Indian Head MassageIHM

IHM has been a traditional part of India’s family life and bonding for thousands of years. Babies there are massaged each day from birth until they are 3 and when the child reaches the age of 6, it is customary for them to share massage with the rest of the family as a symbol of love and respect. IHM has evolved but still remains a healing, harmonious and non-invasive treatment.

What is Indian Head Massage(IHM)?

IHM is a massage of the the upper back, shoulders, upper arms, neck, scalp and face. It can be done over clothes (as well as without clothing on the upper half of the body). If clothes are removed from the upper part of the body, the client has a towel wrapped around them across the the chest area and under the arms. Oil will then be used for the massage (grapeseed oil). The use of oil on the scalp and face is optional, you can still have the scalp and face massage without oil. Agentle accupressure is applied during the scalp and face massage.

Benefits of Indian Head Massage

IHM may help improve circulation, improve lymphatic drainage, boost immune system, relieve muscle tension, stress, anxiety & depression. It may improve sleep, relieve eyestrain/headaches/sinusitis/congestion and may improve productivity and also promote hair growth. It may improve joint mobility, restore balance to the mind and energy flow and more.

Body Exfoliation & Body Wraps

About Body Exfoliation

exfOur skin is the largest organ of the body and it sheds a layer of dead skin daily! Not all of the dead skin cells fall to the ground, some actually stick to our skin which may block pores and hair follicles which in turn prevent our natural oils from rising to the surface.

Benefits of Body Exfoliation

Removes dead skin cells, prevents dead skin cells clogging pores and hair follicles (which may result in painful ingrown hairs), evens and brightens skin tone, promotes hydrated and softer skin.

About Body Wraps

wrapThere are many different types of body wraps available at salons, spa’s and at home. The wrap that will be used at BM, Holistic Therapies will be a Seaweed wrap (which is applied as a mask and then plastic sheeting is used to cover the mask/wrap from the neck to the feet whilst client is lying down).

Benefits of Body Wraps / Masks

Seaweed contains many vitamins and minerals so will therefore nourish inside and outside of the body and will also detoxifies the body through metabolic stimulation. This body wrap/mask is not suitable for those who have allergies to seafood.
The ‘Full Body exfoliation & Seaweed Wrap’ treatment does not include a massage unless you choose the ‘Holiday Heaven’ package on the Price List page. These treatments/package are ideal just before going on holiday and may also prolong your tan!

Crystal Healing

facebook_1437316486448A brief history of Crystal Healing

Crystals have been formed over millions of years through a chemical process within the earth’s crust. They come in many various forms, shapes, sizes, colours and facets and have been recognised throughout history all over the world and they have been regarded as ‘magical’ and as having ‘healing powers’ by different cultures over a long period of time. They have also been seen as symbols of power, wealth, protection, initiation and love in historical times as well as present day. Most of us are drawn to crystals/stones/gems and wear them as jewellery or have ornaments adorned with them. Ever wondered why you are drawn to a certain colour/type/shape of stone or crystal? The answer may lie with the properties of it and how you are feeling emotionally at the time, hence being drawn to it…interesting when you look into it!

What is Crystal Healing?

Crystals have their own energies and properties and their vibrations increase harmony and balance (they emit a piezoelectrical charge as discovered by scientists). Whilst you are laying down, the therapist will place certain crystals around you and will use a terminated crystal above the body in a process to help cleanse and balance your auras and chakras (the energy channels of the body). Through this process, crystals can be placed at chakra points where there is an imbalance of energy (which can be found by the therapist scanning over the body & charkra points or using a pendulum over the chakra points. As humans, we too love through energy and vibrations, just like the crystals do!). Part of the process will involve removing negative energy from the client and restoring positive energy.

Benefits of Crystal Healing

Through their properties and vibrations, crystals may restore balance/equilibrium to the physical body as well as the mind and spirit (energy flow that has been blocked by everyday life such as stress, negative thoughts and a sedentary lifestyle are some causes of illnesses. When our energy is flowing freely, our health and wellbeing is restored to optimum level). May give a deep sense of relaxation during and after a Crystal Healing session. What’s more, certain crystals can be used for lots of different reasons, depending on your situation or how you are feeling (provided they are cleansed and used correctly). Crystals are beautiful, intriguing and powerful and their properties/qualities can enhance your treatment.
